Why Do We Need Scouting in Torrington?

With all the negative stuff a kid is exposed to... it is no wonder some children today seem to lack compassion, discipline and direction. Cable TV, Movies, Video Games and Internet Pornography relentlessly pursue our children with adult and violent content. Even though the content is sometimes labeled mature ~ it is pretty clear who the market is aimed at.
As a child the world no longer seems to have time for discovery, examination and innocence. Kids today are overwhelmed by a constant stream of information shouting what to believe, what to buy, what to wear, what to like and even who is worthy of their respect. The self-esteem of our children has been lost in a sea of self-doubt brought on by uncensored content, underhanded marketing methods and the lack of attention and supervision this new economy has brought upon them.
As a parent, you want your children to find happiness and reach their full potential. But, some parents often find it difficult to always participate in their child's enrichment. Especially, when both parents in a household are working and they still struggle to make ends meet.
As an educator, you want to contribute to a students enrichment and development. But, kids today often seem out of control and unwilling to participate or listen. You find yourself acting more as a disciplinarian rather then a guiding source of inspiration.
As a society, we strive for the next generation to have more opportunities for a better life then the one that proceeded. But, we have deep concerns in light of the recent dark tragedies occurring in our schools and your local BOE seems overwhelmed to do anything significant about it.
Kids today are overwhelmed and confused by the excessive abundance of often useless and sometimes dangerous information they are exposed to. Ramped bullying has become the norm in our schools and has progressed into life threatening situations. For some... without intervention -- the only escape or ability to take back control is to take their own life or even worse - the life's of others in violence.
Scouting offers a sound footing for our children to develop as individuals in a cooperative society. It nurtures humane values, promotes self-esteem and teaches tolerance of others. The courage to stand for oneself and each other, believe in ones self and grow as an individual are all core values and skills learned in the Boy Scouts of America.
Do we need scouting in Torrington? I think we do -- it may be our children's best hope for a better tomorrow.
